Rear Drum Brake Shoes — GMC Sierra & Chevy Silverado 1500 (1999–2007)
From $35 USD / Set
Compatible with: GMC Sierra 1500 & Chevy Silverado 1500 | 1999–2007 | GMT800
Many 1999–2007 GMT800-platform Silverado and Sierra 1500 trucks came from the factory with rear drum brakes — especially base trim levels and 2WD models. Drum brakes on these trucks are designed to last 100,000–150,000 km, but they do wear out — and in Canada’s salted winters they can corrode faster than that. Apex Auto Spare Parts stocks complete rear drum brake shoe sets for the 1999–2007 Silverado and Sierra 1500.
Does Your Silverado or Sierra Have Rear Drums or Rear Discs?
Not all GMT800 trucks have rear drums. Here is how to check:
- Look through your rear wheel spokes — if you see a round metal drum (no rotor visible), you have rear drums
- Base trim (WT, LS) trucks and 2WD trucks more commonly have rear drums
- Higher trim levels (LT, Z71, 4WD) were more often equipped with four-wheel disc brakes
- Check your door sticker or call us with your VIN for confirmation

Signs Your Rear Drum Brake Shoes Need Replacing
- Scraping or grinding sound from the rear when braking — shoes worn to metal
- Vehicle feels like it takes longer to stop — reduced rear braking efficiency
- Rear drums feel hot to the touch after normal driving — sticky wheel cylinder or misadjusted shoes
- Handbrake (parking brake) needs to be pulled much higher than before to hold the truck
- Visible cracks or deep grooves on the drum inner surface
Drum Brake Shoe Replacement Tips
- Replace shoes on BOTH rear wheels at the same time — never just one side
- Measure the drum inner diameter before ordering — if worn over 0.060 in above spec, replace the drum too
- Clean all hardware contact points with brake cleaner and lightly grease sliding surfaces
- Adjust the star wheel adjuster so shoes just drag when you spin the drum by hand
- Test the parking brake function before returning to service
