Battery Terminal & Cable Repair Kit. Terminal corrosion is one of the most common causes of no-start complaints — and one of the easiest and cheapest to prevent. This kit includes everything needed to clean, protect, and if necessary replace your battery terminal connections. Apex Auto Spare Parts ships this kit across Canada and the US.
What’s Included in Battery Terminal & Cable Repair Kit
| Terminal Cleaning Brush | Dual-end wire brush for post and clamp cleaning |
| Anti-Corrosion Felt Washers | Set of 2 (positive + negative) — placed under terminal clamps |
| Dielectric/Terminal Grease | Application tube — prevents future corrosion |
| Replacement Terminal Clamps | Universal top-post clamps, positive and negative |
| Cable Ties | For securing loose cable runs |
Why Terminals Corrode
- Hydrogen gas released during normal battery charging reacts with moisture and metal to form corrosion (usually white/blue-green powder)
- Road salt in Canadian winters accelerates the process significantly
- Loose connections create resistance, heat, and arcing — which accelerates corrosion further
⚠️ Corrosion = voltage drop: Even a thin layer of corrosion between the clamp and post creates resistance. This can cause slow cranking, charging system warnings, or intermittent electrical faults that look like a ‘dying battery’ when the battery itself is fine.
How to Use This Battery Terminal & Cable Repair Kit
- Disconnect negative terminal first, then positive
- Brush both the battery post and the inside of the clamp until shiny metal is visible
- Place anti-corrosion felt washer over each post before reconnecting
- Reconnect positive first, then negative — tighten securely but don’t overtighten
- Apply dielectric grease over the connection to seal out moisture
When to Replace vs Clean
- Light powder corrosion — clean and protect, no replacement needed
- Clamp cracked, broken, or won’t tighten securely — replace with included clamps
- Cable insulation cracked near the terminal — consider a full cable replacement
Frequently Asked Questions about Battery Terminal & Cable Repair Kit
How do I stop my battery terminals from corroding?
Clean any existing corrosion, then apply anti-corrosion felt washers under the terminal clamps and dielectric grease over the connections. Re-check every few months, especially after winter.
Is corrosion dangerous?
Can corrosion cause my truck not to start even with a good battery?
Yes — corrosion increases resistance at the connection point, which can prevent enough current from reaching the starter even if the battery itself is fully charged.
Will this kit work with side-post (GM-style) terminals?
The cleaning brush and grease work for any terminal type. The included replacement clamps are for top-post batteries — side-post terminals typically don’t need clamp replacement, just cleaning and grease.
